the art of knowing 60% - how to start a business
all you need to know is this.
stop reading business content and take action,
you know enough.
we often get ourselves stuck in a loop of studying the things we are interested in,
and because we are interested in it,
we get a dopamine rush from the information and we continue to dream and imagine applying the things we are reading,
unfortunately, the problem is that most of the time these dreams remaining nothing more than,
…well…dreams.
that’s just analysis paralysis and you are probably doing it now.
now some information gathering at first is important,
but often times we feel like we don’t know enough so we continue to find more,
and that search to find more is like a treasure hunt and we feel accomplished doing it,
when in fact,
what we are actually doing,
is stalling the most important step: taking action.
this is nothing more than a defense mechanism,
it protects us,
because what if you do something and fail?
failure hurts.
if you don’t take that first step, you can’t get hurt
and if you keep gathering more information, you feel good,
so you continue the search.
do you get it now?
But how can you do things differently?
to this my answer is “the art of knowing 60%”.
This is where you have spent enough time researching and figuring out the foundational elements of the business you want to start,
including the benefits, the potential hurdles, and the downsides,
you can imagine who the customer base will be,
and know roughly how you can deliver on your product or service.
basically, you know enough to get the ball rolling.
so, the next logical step would be to find a customer. but beyond that you don’t know much else.
believe it or not, knowing who your customer is,
and how you will deliver your product or service is 60% of the battle of business knowledge.
and funny enough, even knowing 60% of what you need to know puts you ahead of the majority of people.
the remaining 40% are price point, staff, taxes, scale, variations, return customers, loans, legal.
but that 40% is not something you can ever learn in theory, it is something that you deal with as your business evolves.
i guarantee you, if you spent 3 hours figuring out your first business idea, vs someone who spent 3 weeks,
The two of you are equally prepared.
this is because you cannot theorize everything a business needs when you are just getting started.
and mostly likely, whatever plan you devised will be thrown out the window,
once your customer tells you what they actually want from you.
no one can tell you exactly what everything you need before getting started, this is why i call it an art,
it’s something that needs to be moulded to your needs,
all you need is 60%.
now get going.
